🏛️ Brunei Museum: A Glimpse of Southeast Asia’s Rich Past (But Oops, It Was Closed!) 🙈

Have you ever been so excited to visit a place, only to get there and find out... it’s closed for renovation?

Well, that’s exactly what happened to me at the Brunei Museum — the National Museum and the largest museum in the country.

🧭 What’s Inside the Brunei Museum?

Located in Kota Batu, just 4.5 km east of Bandar Seri Begawan, the Brunei Museum houses priceless relics and artifacts that tell the story of:

• 🕌 Islamic Art — tiny Qurans, gold ornaments, ceremonial cannons
• 🌿 Natural History — local flora and fauna
• 🏺 Ancient Trade — 9th & 10th century pottery from Central Asia and Iran, glassware from Egypt and the Levant
• ⚔️ Weaponry & Culture — traditional life, ancient cannons, and sultanate artifacts
• 🥋 The Spirit of Budo (Japanese Martial Arts) — replicas of samurai armor, swords, and gear (this was what I came for!)

They say it’s a treasure trove of Southeast Asian heritage with deep relevance to Brunei — and I couldn’t wait to explore.

😢 The Unexpected Turn: It Was Closed

The excitement? Crushed.

When we arrived, we were told the entire museum was under renovation. And yes, I was seriously disappointed — especially because I was looking forward to the “Spirit of Budo” exhibit.
As a huge fan of Japanese culture, this was supposed to be the next best thing to actually going to Japan.

🚌 The Travel Mishap & A Stranger’s Ride 😰

We took the public bus from Bandar Seri Begawan to get there. But since the museum sits a bit off the main route, there were no buses going back to town when we found out it was closed.

Then, a kind stranger — the man who told us the museum was closed — offered us a ride to another nearby spot: the Malay Technology Museum.
We said yes... and only realized halfway through the ride that:

“We’re a group of girls... in a stranger’s car... in a foreign country.” 😳
Cue the panic and silent prayers. That was the longest ride of my life.

Fortunately, it ended well. He really did bring us to the museum and was genuinely helpful. But let’s just say:
🎥 Too many horror movies have made me overly suspicious... and very cautious moving forward!
