If you want to see how locals live, shop, and eat in Brunei, head over to Tamu Kianggeh, also known as Kampong Kianggeh Open Air Market. Situated right beside the Kianggeh River in the heart of Bandar Seri Begawan, this humble yet bustling market offers a genuine slice of everyday Bruneian life.
Just like the wet markets we have here in the Philippines, Tamu Kianggeh is the perfect spot for scoring fresh produce, local delicacies, and affordable meals.
🧺 What to Expect
At first, I thought this was a typical night market selling accessories and souvenirs—but it turned out to be Brunei’s version of a wet and dry market, where locals buy vegetables, fruits, herbs, and even traditional medicines.
They say food stalls can be found deeper inside, offering some of the cheapest meals in Brunei, but we didn’t get the chance to explore further due to time constraints. Still, the experience walking through the market, hearing vendors chat in their native tongue (even if I didn’t understand them), and watching the everyday rhythm was worth the stop.
🍽️ Must-Try Local Dishes
If you have time to linger, food stalls here (mostly open from 2:30 PM until late) are known to serve budget-friendly favorites like:
- 🍛 Nasi Katok – Plain rice with curried or fried chicken and sambal (spicy sauce)
- 🍚 Nasi Lemak – Coconut milk rice with chicken, beef, or prawns, served with egg and cucumber
- 🌿 Nasi Daun Silat – Local rice wrapped in leaves
- 🍤 Udang Galah – Giant freshwater prawns
- 🐟 Pusu with Nasi Kampung – Local fish served with rice, also wrapped in traditional leaves
Prices? You won’t believe it—meals start at just B$1.00! Most stalls are family-owned, giving you that warm, home-cooked meal vibe.
🌊 By the River, Spotlessly Clean
What amazed me the most? The market’s location right beside the river—yet not a single piece of trash floating in sight. Either it’s super well-maintained or the locals take real pride in their surroundings. Coming from a country surrounded by water too, I found this truly admirable.
You can also hop on a water taxi from the riverbank near the market to get to Kampong Ayer, or walk to the nearby Yayasan Complex and catch a boat from there. It’s also easy to spot this market thanks to the Chinese temple nearby.
