🌄 Ngong Ping 360: Top Attractions in Lantau Island, Hong Kong
Lantau Island is the largest of Hong Kong’s islands — almost twice the size of Hong Kong Island. Located just 10km west of Central and stretching 25km in length, it’s home to dramatic peaks, lush greenery, and spiritual retreats. One day is not enough to see it all, but a visit to Ngong Ping 360 gives you a taste of its rich natural and cultural offerings.
Located on a high plateau in the western Lantau hills, Ngong Ping is shadowed by the towering Lantau Peak, Hong Kong’s second-highest mountain. Since the installation of the Tian Tan Big Buddha in 1993, it has become one of the most visited spots in Hong Kong.
What I love most about Ngong Ping is that despite its development, the area still retains its natural charm — with trees, misty hills, and peaceful ambiance all around.

1. 🚠 Ngong Ping 360 Cable Car
This iconic 25-minute cable car ride starts at Tung Chung Station, glides across Tung Chung Bay, and ascends over the North Lantau Country Park, reaching its highest point at Nei Lak Shan (560m).
🧘 From the descending car, the Tian Tan Big Buddha slowly reveals itself, growing larger with every meter closer to the Ngong Ping Station.
📸 Best Tip: Our car was packed on the way up, but nearly empty on the way down — that’s when I captured the best photos.

2. 🏘️ Ngong Ping Village
Next to the cable car terminal lies the Ngong Ping Village — a themed cultural area featuring:
- 🎭 Walking with Buddha
- 🎬 Stage 360
- 🎥 Motion 360
Shops, restaurants, and souvenir stalls line the village walkways. Come early in the morning to avoid the crowds and get those perfect village shots with fewer photobombers!
3. 🌳 Bodhi Wishing Shrine
Located under the sacred Bodhi Tree, this shrine invites visitors to write their wishes on a card and hang them. It's believed your wish will come true — especially for the faithful and hopeful.
🧧 Tip: Cards are redeemable upon spending HK$150 at the Ngong Ping 360 Souvenir Shop.
4. 🏛️ Ngong Ping Piazza
This vast 1.5-hectare piazza was built at a cost of HK$77.5 million and opened in 2010. It features:
- 🎐 Pai Lau archway (Qing Dynasty style)
- 🐲 Bodhi Path lined with the Twelve Divine Generals
- 🕊️ Di Tan (Earth Temple) for events
- 🌿 A beautiful Chinese landscape garden
🕯️ Along the way, don't miss the giant bronze cauldron commemorating the return of Hong Kong to China in 1997.
5. 🧘 Tian Tan Buddha (The Big Buddha)
The star of Ngong Ping!
- 🌍 One of the world’s largest seated outdoor bronze Buddha statues
- 🙏 Modeled after Sakyamuni Buddha
- 🪷 Sits atop a three-tier lotus podium
- 🪜 Requires climbing 268 steps to reach the base
The right hand is raised in the Abhaya Mudra (fearlessness), and the left rests in the Varada Mudra (blessings). Inside the podium is a three-story exhibition hall, but photography is not allowed inside.
📸 Tip: The best views of the island and monastery are from the top.
6. ⛩️ Po Lin Monastery
A must-visit spiritual site beside the Big Buddha. The monastery includes:

- 📚 Scripture Library
- 🪔 Dharma Hall
The architecture, decorated roofs, and detailed sculptures make this a photographer’s paradise — just be respectful and refrain from taking photos inside the sacred halls (yes, I sneakily took one or two 😅).

A spiritual path composed of 38 tall wooden columns carved with excerpts from the Heart Sutra, arranged in an ∞ (infinity) symbol. It's serene, scenic, and deeply meditative.
