✈️ First Time in Taiwan? Here’s Your Transportation Cheat Sheet from TPE Airport
Whether you’re heading to Taipei, Taichung, or exploring Taiwan’s hidden gems, Taoyuan International Airport (TPE) makes it incredibly easy to get around. But with all the express trains, commuter trains, shuttles, buses, taxis, and car rentals, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed — especially if you’re a first-time visitor.
This guide breaks down everything you need to know, so you can make the best choice based on your budget, time, and destination.
I’ve personally tried some of these options and researched others while helping friends plan their itineraries. Let’s break it all down!
π EXPRESS TRAIN TO TAIPEI
The Taoyuan Airport MRT (Express Line) now connects both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 directly to Taipei Main Station in just 35–40 minutes.
- Stops: Only 3 stops (fastest option to Taipei by train)
- Website: www.tymetro.com.tw
- Fare: Around NT$160 (₱240)
- Hours: 6:00 AM – 11:00 PM (check for updates)
✅ Great for: Tourists heading straight to Taipei without needing to transfer via HSR or taxi.
π COMMUTER TRAIN
Also run by Taoyuan Metro, the Commuter Train is slower than the Express Line but makes more stops, which is helpful if your destination is not Taipei Main.
- Slightly cheaper but takes longer than the Express Line
- Also connects to key stops in Taoyuan and New Taipei City
π AIRPORT TAXIS
If you prefer convenience over cost, taxis are available 24/7 on the west side of both terminals.
- Cost to Taipei: Around NT$1,100–1,200 (₱1,600–1,750)
- Tip: Clarify that you want Taoyuan Airport, not Songshan Airport (the latter is downtown Taipei)
- Taxi Info Hotlines:
- Terminal 1: (03) 398-2832
- Terminal 2: (03) 398-3599
π¨ Heads Up: There’s a 50% surcharge on top of the meter rate + toll fees.
π PRE-ARRANGED CAR SERVICE
Perfect for groups or travelers with lots of luggage. These are pre-booked online and offer fixed rates and hotel drop-off.
Recommended Providers:
π‘ Best For: Families, first-time travelers, or groups who want peace of mind after landing.
π BUSES TO TAIPEI AND BEYOND
Buses operate from both terminals and go to Taipei, Taichung, Zhongli, Banqiao, Changhua, and THSR stations.
- To THSR Taoyuan Station:
- UBUS #705
- Cost: NT$30 (~₱45)
- Frequency: Every 10–15 minutes
- HSR Ticket to Taipei: NT$160 (~₱240)
- Check-in options for EVA Air & China Airlines at the station
π Bus terminals are located just outside the Arrivals Lobby. Ask at the information desk if unsure.
π TAIWAN HIGH SPEED RAIL (THSR)
- THSR Taoyuan Station is about 8 km from the airport
- Take UBUS #705 from the airport
- From there, catch a HSR train to Taipei, Taichung, or Kaohsiung
✨ Fast, reliable, and highly recommended if you're going beyond Taipei.
π§ Passenger Pick-Up & Meeting Points
- LCD screens in the arrival halls show passengers entering the meeting area
- Small vehicle lane and parking areas available for pick-ups
- Parking is free for the first 30 minutes — perfect if you’re waiting for someone
πΌ Special Services
- Foreign Laborer Pick-Up: Employers or agencies can request special pickup services at the Foreign Workers Arrival Service Counter
