The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is a true architectural gem in Bandar Seri Begawan, and it was the first landmark that captured my heart upon arriving in Brunei. Named after the 28th Sultan of Brunei, the mosque is an elegant symbol of Islamic faith and Bruneian identity. It's no wonder it's considered one of the most beautiful mosques in Southeast Asia.
๐ซ A Mosque That Shines by Day and Glows by Night

Built over four years of construction, this majestic mosque rises from the heart of an artificial lagoon, which beautifully reflects the structure—especially at night. Seeing it lit up, its golden dome glowing like fire against the dark sky, left me speechless. It’s not just a house of worship, it’s a masterpiece of spiritual and architectural beauty.
๐ซ No Entry – But No Regrets
When we tried to visit the mosque’s interior, we were politely told that non-Muslims weren’t allowed in that day due to a special religious event. Locals kindly directed us to another mosque open to visitors—but because of time constraints, we couldn’t go.
Still, just seeing its exterior was already unforgettable. The dome alone—made of pure gold—was enough to make me stop, stare, and fall in love.
๐ช The Lavish Interior (I Wish I Saw!)
According to several travelers’ blogs and reviews, the mosque’s interior is even more extravagant than its stunning exterior. And that says a lot!
- ๐️ Italian marble floors and walls
- ๐ Stained-glass windows and chandeliers from England
- ๐งต Carpets from Saudi Arabia and Belgium
- ๐จ A 3.5-million-piece Venetian mosaic inside the dome
All of this makes me long to return just to experience its sacred elegance firsthand.
๐ค A Floating Replica Barge & Connecting Bridges
In front of the mosque sits a stone barge—a replica of Sultan Bolkiah’s 16th-century ceremonial vessel. It was built to commemorate the 1,400th anniversary of the Nuzul Al-Quran (Revelation of the Quran) and once hosted Quran reading competitions.
Two beautiful marble bridges connect the mosque to the mainland and Kampong Ayer, Brunei’s famous water village.
๐ Tallest Building in BSB — By Royal Decree
Standing at 171 feet, the mosque’s marble minaret dominates the Bandar Seri Begawan skyline. In fact, no building is allowed to exceed its height. Legend has it that even the nearby Islamic Bank of Brunei had its top floor removed by royal order so as not to overshadow the mosque.

At the top of the minaret is an elevator-accessible observation deck, offering panoramic views of the city—another reason to return someday.
๐ Why I Keep Coming Back
Even though I’m not Muslim, this mosque has drawn me in like a moth to a flame. I found myself wanting to return again and again—whether day or night—to admire its ethereal facade and powerful spiritual presence.
๐ TRAVEL TIP: It’s best viewed at night when it’s all lit up. Walk from central Bandar and follow the glow—you’ll be there before you know it.
