✨ A Personal Way to Reconnect — One Church at a Time
Just in case you're in Cebu during Holy Week or planning to visit, and you're interested in doing Visita Iglesia, here’s a curated route based on the churches we visited during our trip to Simala.
π A Journey of Faith with My Devout Nanay
Though I had already explored Cebu, I only discovered The Monastery of the Holy Eucharist, or more popularly, Simala Shrine, when planning a special trip with my devout Catholic Nanay (Mom) and my sisters. Knowing how much she loves visiting old churches, I added Simala to our itinerary—and I’m so glad I did.

✨ That Moment the Pink Church Caught My Eye
Going to Simala Shrine, you’ll see a number of churches along the way — some big, some small, some centuries old. But there was one that really made me sit up in the van.

When we visited Simala Shrine in Sibonga, I wasn’t expecting another breathtaking church to steal my attention — but that’s exactly what happened with Nuestra SeΓ±ora del Pilar Church.
"A journey through history, faith, and timeless architecture"
π Sta. Cruz,
Marinduque, Philippines
✨ A Glimpse into the Past
Sta. Cruz Church, built in 1714, is the oldest church in Marinduque. Nestled in the largest town on the island, this historical landmark is a proud symbol of centuries-old devotion and colonial-era architecture.
Though renovated over the years, the original bell tower and altar remain intact, preserving its spiritual and architectural heritage.
π️ A Church Built on Faith and History
The Boac Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is a treasured religious and historical landmark in Marinduque. Construction began in 1580 and was completed in 1792, making it one of the oldest churches in the Philippines.

✨ The Church That Gave Me a Strange Yet Comforting Feeling
This church is one of those that caught my eye on the road to Simala. I couldn’t quite explain why — maybe it was how it stood proudly, its classic faΓ§ade glowing under the sun, or maybe it was the odd but familiar feeling I had just looking at it.
⛪ A Heritage Stop Between Carmen and Baclayon
We were en route from Carmen (after seeing the Chocolate Hills) to Baclayon Church when I caught a glimpse of this serene old structure. Curious, I asked our driver to pull over—just for a few minutes—and I'm so glad we did.
This was Alburquerque Church, also known as Santa Monica Parish Church.
When I was preparing our itinerary, my friend made a special request—we have to attend a Catholic Mass. Since Brunei is a Muslim country, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But with a little research, I found the Church of Our Lady of Assumption, the only Catholic church in Bandar Seri Begawan. It’s a 15-minute walk from the city center—and along the way, we passed some of Brunei’s most notable landmarks.
If you’re visiting Kalibo, a stop at the Kalibo Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, is a must—not just for its spiritual importance, but also for its historic and cultural value. πΏ
π A Church Built Through Time
Kalibo Cathedral was originally located in Barrio Laguinbanwa, Numancia, but was transferred to its current location and constructed in 1804.
Following a devastating 7.1 magnitude earthquake, the cathedral underwent a major reconstruction between 1993 and 1997. You can still see traces of its story today—new bricks alongside remnants of the old—quietly blending history and renewal on its walls.
π Honoring Two Patrons: Sto. NiΓ±o and St. John the Baptist
Though Kalibo is most famous for the Ati-Atihan Festival, which honors the Sto. NiΓ±o, the cathedral's principal patron is actually St. John the Baptist, whose feast is celebrated every June 24.
✨ A lesser-known but deeply spiritual part of the church is the Shrine of Sto. NiΓ±o, which attracts thousands of pilgrims every January. I wasn’t able to get a good look at the shrine during my visit—it was mass time, and the church quickly filled with locals eager to get a seat.
π♀️ My Experience: Mass in Aklanon
Attending mass here was a unique cultural experience. The mass was celebrated in Aklanon, and while I understood a few words, the homily mostly escaped me. That’s always a challenge when traveling to provinces with their own dialects—but it’s also part of the charm.
⏱️ Tip: If you're not from the area and plan to attend a mass, try coming early. Locals rush in to get seats, and the cathedral can get crowded fast!
π How to Get There
πΊ From anywhere in Kalibo, you can simply hop on a tricycle and say “Cathedral”—everyone knows where it is.

πΈ What Makes It Special
π£ Kalibo Cathedral isn't just a religious structure—it's a spiritual home, a historical witness, and a center of local devotion. Whether you're there to pray, attend mass, or explore the area, there's something profoundly calming about being within its walls.
π―️ Take a moment. Light a candle. Soak in the silence. You might just find something you're not even looking for.
✨ Stop by Kalibo Cathedral and let the town’s deep faith and heritage leave a lasting impression on your journey.
When you hear “Panglao,” your mind probably jumps straight to white sand beaches, diving spots, or the sunset over Alona. Mine did too—until I found myself standing quietly in front of this old coral stone church, not far from the market, far from the crowds. And I thought, How did I miss this before?
⛪ Dauis Church: The Miraculous Well and Gothic Treasure of Panglao
Just across the bridge from Tagbilaran lies one of Bohol’s most beloved and mysterious old churches—the Church of Our Lady of the Assumption, commonly known as Dauis Church.
π Baclayon Church: A Testament of Faith and History in Bohol
One of the main reasons I wanted to visit Bohol was its beautiful old churches. After falling in love with the historical churches of Ilocos, I looked for other provinces rich in Spanish-era architecture—and Bohol did not disappoint. Among its many heritage sites, La Purisima Concepcion de la Virgen Maria Parish Church, more commonly known as Baclayon Church, truly stood out.
π°️ A Glimpse of the Past
Standing at the heart of Tubigon is an old church that once radiated timeless grace. Built in 1886, with its bell tower completed from 1928 to 1934, this church has long been a silent witness to the town's history.
π A Church in the Heart of the City
We had no plans of visiting this place. But while waiting for the guards to open the Bohol Museum, we wandered around the area and stumbled upon this charming church.
π Also Known As...
This is the first church in the Philippines dedicated to St. Vitales, and while it may not be as crowded as the Basilica Menor del Sto. NiΓ±o, it certainly holds its own historical and spiritual charm.

π A Church by the River: Before the Quake
Nestled peacefully along the Loboc River is one of Bohol’s oldest and most historic religious structures — Loboc Church, formally known as Saint Peter the Apostle Parish Church.
✨ A Church Like No Other
If there's one place in Cebu that brings together faith, culture, and history—it's the Basilica Minore del Santo NiΓ±o. Commonly known as the Sto. NiΓ±o Church, this sacred site is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Philippines.

π A Walk Down History — and the Longest Aisle in the Country
Tayabas Basilica, also known as the Minor Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel, is one of the oldest and largest churches in the Philippines. What makes it truly unique is its key-shaped layout and the longest aisle you’ll ever walk in a Filipino church.
