๐️ A Church Built on Faith and History
The Boac Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception, is a treasured religious and historical landmark in Marinduque. Construction began in 1580 and was completed in 1792, making it one of the oldest churches in the Philippines.
It’s most famously known as the place where the Katipunan flag was baptized, marking its deep connection to the country's fight for freedom.
⚔️ A Safe Refuge in Times of War
During the era of Moro and Spanish conflict, Muslim forces—angered by the actions of the ruling Spanish colonizers—launched an attack on Christian towns. In a time of panic and fear, townspeople rushed to the cathedral for refuge.
As they prayed fervently to the Virgin Mary, legend says a powerful storm suddenly struck, and in the midst of it, an image of a beautiful lady with outstretched arms appeared on the church wall. The Moros were so terrified by the vision that they fled in fear and confusion.
๐ The Birth of a Beloved Title: Ina ng Biglang Awa
Since that miraculous moment, the Virgin Mary has been
honored in Marinduque as “Ina ng Biglang Awa” (Mother of Immediate Mercy).

A memorial stone now marks the very spot on the church wall where she
appeared.

Even the longest bridge in Boac is named after her—Biglang Awa Bridge.
