When I was preparing our itinerary, my friend made a special request—we have to attend a Catholic Mass. Since Brunei is a Muslim country, I wasn’t sure what to expect. But with a little research, I found the Church of Our Lady of Assumption, the only Catholic church in Bandar Seri Begawan. It’s a 15-minute walk from the city center—and along the way, we passed some of Brunei’s most notable landmarks.
Attending mass here was a meaningful and memorable experience that made me appreciate the country’s quiet but respectful religious diversity.

On your right, you’ll spot St. Andrew’s Anglican Church.
Keep walking just a bit more, and you’ll arrive at the Church of Our Lady of Assumption on the right-hand side.
π Tip: If you’re early, you can drop by Lapau, the Royal Regalia Museum, or grab a quick snack at Tamu Selera on your way back.
π What to Expect:
This church is very strict with time. You must be inside before the Mass starts. Once the ceremony begins, they close the doors, and no latecomers are allowed to enter. We made sure to arrive early and even sat near the back just in case.
The Mass is in English, presided over by a Singaporean priest, and attended mostly by Filipinos, along with Indian and Bruneian Catholics. The community was warm and familiar, and even though we were travelers, we felt right at home.

Attending Mass in Brunei added a deeper layer to our trip. In a country where Islam is the official religion, it was comforting to find a spiritual sanctuary where we could quietly reflect and reconnect. Whether you’re a Catholic, spiritual traveler, or just curious, I highly recommend making time for this stop.
