"A Neo-Gothic Surprise on the Road to Simala"

🧭 A Beautiful Distraction En Route to Simala
When we visited Simala Shrine in Sibonga, I wasn’t expecting another breathtaking church to steal my attention — but that’s exactly what happened with Nuestra Señora del Pilar Church.
On our way to Simala, I spotted it from the car window — tall spires, pointed arches, and its unmistakable Neo-Gothic façade standing proudly at the heart of town. Something about its old-world design pulled me in.
I didn’t get a chance to ask Kuya driver to stop on the way back, and the church was closed when we passed again. So I did what any curious traveler would do — snapped quick photos from inside the car, hoping I’d get another chance to return and step inside.
🖼️ What Makes This Church Special?
- 🧱
Neo-Gothic Architecture
Built between 1866 and 1898, this church showcases twin bell towers and intricate Gothic details — a rare sight in southern Cebu. - 🎨
Trompe-l’oeil Ceiling Murals
Inside are stunning ceiling paintings by Raymundo Francia, a Cebuano artist known for his illusion-style frescoes. Sadly, I didn’t see them myself — yet another reason to come back! - 🏛️
Heritage Landmark
Declared a National Cultural Treasure, this church is not just beautiful — it’s part of our living history.
🛠️ 2025 Restoration Update
After the damage from Typhoon Odette, restoration began in 2025 thanks to provincial funds and TIEZA support. The project includes ceiling preservation, convent repairs, and structural reinforcements. They're even gathering old photos from locals to ensure accuracy — so if you have one, consider donating a copy!

🗣️ Why I’ll Be Back
I may have missed the chance to enter this time, but this church left a mark on me — not just for its design but because it reminded me that sometimes, the best discoveries are the ones that surprise us along the way.
Next time I’m in Sibonga, I’m making this church my main destination.
