🇵🇭Bagasbas Beach: A Surfing Paradise and Hidden Gem in Camarines Norte

Bagasbas Beach, located in Daet, Camarines Norte, is one of the most popular surfing spots in the Bicol region. Known for its long stretch of gray sand, strong Pacific waves, and laid-back coastal vibe, it’s a favorite among surfers—both beginners and pros.

I got to visit Bagasbas Beach as part of the Beach Bumming Package we booked through Travel Factor. After spending a magical night in Calaguas Island, we were brought here by the agency’s private bus for a quick half-day stopover before heading back to Manila. Though short, the experience left a lasting impression.

🏖️ First Impressions

We arrived late in the afternoon, so I missed the famous Bagasbas sunrise, which locals say is absolutely breathtaking. Still, walking along the wide, 3-kilometer shoreline while enjoying the salty breeze and the sound of crashing waves made it worthwhile. The gray sand was soft beneath our feet—perfect for a stroll or just relaxing by the water.

That said, I couldn’t help but notice the litter scattered on parts of the beach. It’s a reminder that as travelers, we must always respect and preserve the beauty of places we visit. Bagasbas has so much potential—if only we take care of it.

🏄‍♀️ Surf or Snack?

While many in our group rented boards and tried their luck riding the waves, my friends and I went for a more relaxed approach: a food trip! There were street food vendors near the beach selling local snacks—fish balls, kikiam, banana cue, and more. We ate while sitting under a tree, listening to the waves and watching surfers catch breaks.

If you’re looking to try surfing, this is a great spot—affordable lessons and board rentals are available right on the beach. Surf instructors are friendly and helpful, especially for first-timers.

🌊 Things to Do in Bagasbas Beach

  • Surfing: Consistent waves all year round make this a go-to surfing destination for newbies and seasoned surfers alike.
  • Kite Flying: The strong Pacific breeze is perfect for flying kites.
  • Sea Turtle Watching: From September to February, female sea turtles come ashore to nest—just another magical aspect of this beach!
  • Beach Walks & Picnics: The long shoreline is ideal for a peaceful walk or a beach hangout with friends and family.

📌 Fun Facts About Bagasbas Beach

  • The area used to be a vast rice field—“Bagas” means rice in Bicolano.
  • It's a top choice for beginner surfers because of the predictable wave patterns.
  • There are a number of restaurants, bars, and small shops just steps from the shore.
  • Caution: Due to strong undercurrents, it’s not always safe for swimming—especially for children or non-swimmers.

📍 How to Get There from Daet

It’s easy! Just hop on a tricycle and tell the driver you’re headed to Bagasbas Beach. It’s a short ride from the town center, and the locals are more than happy to point you in the right direction.

Final Tip: If you're planning to join a travel tour like we did with Travel Factor, check if Bagasbas is included in the itinerary—it’s a great bonus stop after Calaguas. Whether you’re there to ride waves or simply unwind with street food by the sea, Bagasbas offers a humble charm that’s hard to resist.

🕰️ A Little Personal Update

My last visit to Bagasbas Beach was back in 2010, so I’m not sure how much it has changed since then. Has it improved, or has it stayed the same? I can only imagine how it looks now. With the growing interest in surfing and Bicol as a travel destination, I hope that the local community has taken steps to preserve the beauty of the beach and its surrounding environment. If you’re planning to visit, it would be great to see how it’s evolved over the years!
