🏛️ Sariaya, Quezon Travel Guide: Heritage Homes, Festivals & Must-See Spots

The last stop on my Quezon Province trip was the town of Sariaya—and it turned out to be the perfect way to end my journey.

After checking out from my hotel in Tayabas, I headed straight to Sariaya, not only because of its charm but also because it was a convenient jump-off point to the port for my ride home. But Sariaya isn’t just about convenience—it’s a town rich in history, culture, and architectural elegance.

🏞️ Sariaya at a Glance

Did you know that Sariaya is the only Mount Banahaw town in Quezon (and even in Laguna!) that has a sea coast? It’s also one of the acknowledged heritage centers in Southern Tagalog.

Every time I pass by this town, I can't help but be drawn to the elegant old houses standing proudly near the church. They’re not just houses—they’re witnesses of time.

🎉 Festivals in Sariaya

🧺 Agawan Festival – Every May 15

Held in honor of San Isidro Labrador, Sariaya's Agawan Festival is its version of the Lucban Pahiyas. The streets come alive with colorful decorations made of kiping, candies, fruits, and food—tied to bamboo poles for a reason: to be snatched!

Yes—Agawan means snatching, and the fun is in watching locals and visitors deliberately grab the goodies off the decorations. It’s festive chaos, and you’re welcome to join in!

🌟 Belen Festival – Every December 15

Come Christmas season, the town celebrates the Belen Festival, showcasing artistic renditions of the nativity scene. Locals creatively display their Belens using clay, plaster, and ceramic models—making each one a personal tribute to the birth of Christ.

Here are some of the best places I visited during my short yet meaningful stay:

 🏠 Governor Natalio Enriquez Ancestral House

This was one of the main reasons I came to Quezon Province in the first place. The architecture of this 1931 mansion is stunning, and though I only admired it from the outside, I was in awe. ⛪ Sariaya Church (Saint Francis of Assisi Parish Church)

Just a few steps from the Enriquez House is this beautiful church, whose history stretches back to 1599. Like many colonial churches, it’s been rebuilt several times due to earthquakes and floods. Still, its spirit stands strong, making it a sacred landmark in the town. 👉 [Read more here »]

🏞️ Town Plaza & Municipal Hall

In front of the church is the town plaza, which features a monument to Jose Rizal. Across it stands the Municipal Hall, which has a facade that almost looks like a chapel. Surrounding the plaza are ancestral homes that speak volumes of the town’s rich past. 👉 [Read more here »]

🏯 Don Catalino Rodriguez Ancestral House (Villa Sariaya)

Just a few blocks from the church stands this massive old home built in the 1920s by artisans from Bulacan and Pampanga. Once owned by former Mayor Don Catalino Rodriguez, this house covers nearly an entire block and feels like an open-air museum. 👉 [Read more here »]

Don’t leave without trying the famous Pinagong from the Sariaya Bread House! It’s a fist-shaped bread that pairs perfectly with black coffee. Soft, flavorful, and affordable—a true taste of local comfort.
