✝️ Crucified Christ & Map of Leyte Monument – A Symbol of Faith and Liberation in Tacloban

Tacloban surprised me in so many ways, and this monument tucked quietly beside the city hall was one of them. It wasn’t on our original itinerary, but we made a quick stop—and I’m glad we did.

Located at Kanruhaw Hill, right beside Tacloban City Hall, this religious and historical monument left a mark on me, not just because of its powerful symbolism, but also because of the story behind its unique design.

๐Ÿ—บ️ The Map of Leyte as the Crucified Christ

What makes this monument unforgettable is its dual imagery: on one side is the Crucified Christ, and on the other is the map of Leyte. According to artist Nemiranda, the shape of Leyte itself reminded him of a crucified man. It’s an interpretation that’s deeply symbolic and moving—a powerful visual that unites faith and Filipino history.

The monument stands over a now-dry wishing pond and fountain (under renovation during our visit), but even with the metal bars and scaffoldings, the monument stood solemn and dignified.

๐Ÿชจ At its base are two stone tablets:

“Leyte is indeed blessed for being the gateway to Christianity and liberation of the Philippines.”
Gov. Remedios L. Petilla

“The Map of Leyte is indeed the crucified Christ.”
Nemiranda, Artist

๐Ÿ•Š️ It’s not just a monument—it’s a prayer, a history lesson, and a piece of art.

๐Ÿ›️ A Peaceful Stop Above the City

While the monument itself is the highlight, the entire area around Kanruhaw Hill is worth walking through. Behind the statue is the Tacloban City Hall, and if you have time, I recommend taking the stone steps down to the Peace Shrine—it’s a tranquil walk, perfect for reflection.

Even if the fountain wasn’t working when we went, the peace I felt standing there, overlooking the sea and thinking of Leyte’s role in Philippine history, made it all worth it.
