🏞️ Tasek Lama Recreational Park: Nature, Trails & Fitness in the Heart of Brunei

🌿 Brunei’s Green Escape in the City

You might think the capital city of Brunei—Bandar Seri Begawan—is all about mosques, malls, and markets. That’s exactly what I thought, too. But Brunei proved me wrong.

Nestled just minutes away from the city's center lies Tasek Lama Recreational Park, a green sanctuary that’s not just for sightseeing—but for soaking in nature, staying fit, and experiencing Brunei’s commitment to conservation.

πŸ“Έ Photos above were taken on our way to the park from the Royal Regalia Building.

🌳 More Than Just a Park

Tasek Lama is one of the oldest nature reserves in the city and serves as a natural water reservoir for Bandar Seri Begawan. But that’s not all—it’s also a symbol of Brunei’s diplomatic friendship. Visiting dignitaries are invited to plant trees here, as a gesture of strengthening international ties. 🌍🌱

πŸ₯Ύ Things to See & Do in Tasek Lama Park

🏞️ Explore Nature Trails

The park has clearly marked jungle trails that lead to:

  • 🌊 A natural waterfall
  • πŸ¦… Sarang Helang (Bird’s Nest lookout)
  • πŸŒ„ Bukit Markuching for panoramic views

Tip: If you’re up for a mini-hike, follow the steep incline to the lookout tower—the views over the city skyline and forest canopy are worth it!

πŸ’ͺ Workout in the Open Air

What truly made me smile was seeing outdoor gym equipment right in the middle of nature. No stuffy, air-conditioned gyms here—just sunshine, fresh air, and fitness!

  • Jogging trails with shock-absorbing tracks πŸƒ‍♀️
  • Calisthenics bars & equipment πŸ’ͺ
  • Clean, shady areas for stretching & cool-downs 🌀️

🌸 Relax in the Japanese Garden

After walking around, take a moment at the Japanese-style garden—complete with small ponds and shaded benches. It’s peaceful, quiet, and the perfect place to just be.

πŸ‘£ Try the Reflexology Foot Path

If you're feeling a bit adventurous (and barefoot!), walk the reflexology stone path. It's said to stimulate acupressure points connected to your body’s energy meridians. The handrail makes it senior-friendly, too.

🧭 My Personal Experience (and Funny Mistake!)

We decided to walk to Tasek Lama right after our visit to the Royal Regalia Museum. Locals said it was just a “15-minute walk”... but that’s probably if you jog 🫣.

In reality, it took us about 30 minutes, under the heat, trying to figure out directions. We kept walking... and walking... until, finally, we saw a small local store near the park’s entrance. Cold drinks and buko juice saved us!

πŸ›‘ No entrance fee. No guides. Just nature, peace, and plenty of shade.

We didn’t get to explore all the trails since we arrived a bit late and were too tired. But we enjoyed the park’s cleanliness, serenity, and unique features.

πŸ‘¨‍πŸ‘©‍πŸ‘§ Perfect for Families

Whether you're visiting Brunei solo or with your family, this park is an ideal escape:

  • πŸ‘Ά Playground for kids
  • 🧘‍♀️ Fitness space for adults
  • πŸ‘΅ Easy trails and benches for seniors

Had we had more time, I would’ve loved to follow the jungle trail to Bukit Markuching and relax in the Japanese pool area. Maybe next time? πŸ˜‰

πŸ’¬ Brunei’s beauty is not always loud or flashy—but it’s quietly powerful. Places like Tasek Lama show how this small nation honors both its environment and its people.

I honestly wish we had spent more time there. It was a much-needed break from the typical tourist stops.
