Feeling down from time to time is normal, but when hopelessness and despair linger and refuse to go away, it may be depression. Depression makes it tough to function and enjoy life like you once did. Even getting through the day can feel overwhelming.
But no matter how hopeless you feel, you can get better. By understanding the causes, symptoms, and types of depression, you take the first powerful step towards healing.
π What is Depression?
Depression is more than sadness. It changes how you think, feel, and function daily — affecting your ability to work, study, eat, sleep, and enjoy life. Feelings of helplessness and worthlessness can be intense and unrelenting.
Some describe depression as “living in a black hole” or a feeling of impending doom. Others feel lifeless, empty, and apathetic. Men in particular may feel angry or restless.
It’s important to remember: these feelings are symptoms of depression — not the reality of your situation. There are many ways to lift your mood, overcome depression, and regain your joy for life.
π 10 Common Symptoms of Depression
- Feelings of helplessness & hopelessness – A bleak outlook with no hope of improvement.
- Loss of interest in activities – No longer caring about hobbies, social activities, or intimacy.
- Appetite or weight changes – Significant weight loss or gain (more than 5% in a month).
- Sleep changes – Insomnia or oversleeping.
- Anger or irritability – Feeling agitated, restless, or easily frustrated.
- Loss of energy – Feeling fatigued and physically drained. Even small tasks are exhausting.
- Self-loathing – Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt, harsh self-criticism.
- Reckless behavior – Substance abuse, compulsive gambling, reckless driving, or dangerous sports.
- Concentration problems – Trouble focusing, making decisions, or remembering things.
- Unexplained aches & pains – Increased headaches, back pain, or stomach pain.
⚖️ Is it Depression or Bipolar Disorder?
Bipolar disorder (manic depression) involves serious shifts in mood, energy, and behavior. In the low phase, it resembles depression, often leading to misdiagnosis. Taking antidepressants alone for bipolar depression can worsen symptoms.
If you’ve ever experienced periods of excessive euphoria, racing thoughts, impulsive behavior, or little need for sleep, consider getting evaluated for bipolar disorder.
⚠️ Depression and Suicide Risk
Depression is a major risk factor for suicide. The deep despair it brings can make suicide feel like the only escape.
Warning Signs of Suicide:
- Talking about killing or harming oneself
- Expressing strong feelings of hopelessness or being trapped
- Preoccupation with death or dying
- Reckless behavior (e.g., speeding through red lights)
- Calling or visiting people to say goodbye
- Getting affairs in order, giving away possessions
- Saying things like “Everyone would be better off without me”
- A sudden switch from deep depression to calm or happiness
π If you suspect someone is considering suicide, express your concern and seek help immediately. Talking openly about suicidal thoughts can save lives.
π If You Are Feeling Suicidal…
When you’re depressed or suicidal, your problems may feel permanent and overwhelming. But with time, treatment, and support, things can get better.
