๐Ÿ—บ️ How to Get Around Vigan: Calesas, Tricycles, Walking Tours & More

"Your Local Guide to Exploring the Heritage City with Ease and Charm"

Wondering how to get around Vigan? From romantic calesa rides to budget tricycles and charming walking tours, Vigan offers multiple ways to explore its cobblestone streets and colonial beauty.

Exploring Vigan is part of its magic—its small-town layout, well-preserved Spanish heritage, and calm provincial vibe make it one of the most walkable cities in the Philippines. During our stay, we walked most of the time. The cool breeze and rows of ancestral houses made every step scenic and soothing.

But for those moments we needed a lift, here are your options:

๐ŸŽ 1. Calesa Rides (Horse-Drawn Carriages)

Step back in time with a calesa ride around Vigan! It’s more than just transportation—it’s part of the full colonial experience.

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ Rates: 150200 (short loop or mini tour)
  • ๐Ÿ“ Where to find: Near Plaza Burgos, Calle Crisologo, and Plaza Salcedo
  • Tip: Agree on the rate before you ride. Many kutseros are also excellent storytellers and local guides!

๐Ÿ›บ 2. Tricycles – Budget-Friendly and Local

If you’re heading to areas outside the heritage zone—like Mindoro Beach, Hidden Garden, or Pagburnayan (pottery)—tricycles are your go-to.

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ Rates: 1020 per person (within town); 50+ for farther destinations
  • Tip: Always clarify the fare before riding. Most drivers are kind and helpful, but transparency is key.

๐Ÿšถ 3. Walking – The Best Way to Discover

Honestly, Vigan is best explored on foot. Most major attractions like the Vigan Cathedral, Syquia Mansion, Crisologo Museum, and even food spots like Cafe Leona are walkable.

  • ๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Tip: Wear comfortable shoes—those cobblestones may look pretty, but they’re tough on your feet! We wore sneakers and never looked back.

๐Ÿš— 4. Private Car or Self-Drive

If you’re on a road trip around Ilocos, having a car is convenient, especially for day trips to Bantay Bell Tower, Baluarte, or Santa Maria Church.

  • Tip: Waze and Google Maps are helpful, but don’t hesitate to ask locals—they often know better shortcuts and scenic routes.

๐Ÿšฒ 5. Bike Rentals (Optional, but Fun!)

Some inns and homestays offer bikes for rent—a perfect early morning activity before the streets get crowded.

  • ๐Ÿ’ฐ Rates: 100200 per hour
  • Tip: Explore around Plaza Salcedo, Heritage Village, or nearby barangays—great way to enjoy the peace of Vigan.

Real Talk: What’s the Best Way?

If you're staying for a night or two, walking + calesa will give you the most charming experience.
If you're short on time or exploring the outskirts, tricycles or private cars work best.
Morning person? Try a bike ride at sunrise—it’s peaceful and picture-perfect.
