If you’re a history lover visiting Brunei, then the Brunei History Centre deserves a spot on your itinerary. Located in Bandar Seri Begawan, just a short walk from the Royal Regalia Museum, this institution is dedicated to preserving and promoting over 600 years of Bruneian history, with a special focus on the legacy of its sultans.
๐ What to Expect
Founded in 1982, the Brunei History Centre serves as a national resource institution for research, documentation, and exhibition of the nation's heritage. It houses:
- ๐ Historical documents and manuscripts
- ๐ชฆ Replicas and brass rubbings of ancient tombs
- ๐ฐ Genealogical records of the Brunei royal family
- ๐ธ Photographic and visual exhibits
One of its core missions is to educate both locals and tourists about the deep roots of the Bruneian monarchy and culture — instilling national pride and preserving traditions for generations to come.
"As one of the oldest nations in Asia, Brunei has a rich and fascinating past. Understanding it is not only important for Bruneians but for anyone wanting to connect with Southeast Asia’s historical tapestry."
๐♀️ Sadly, when we visited, the centre was closed — another reason to return to Brunei someday. I always believe in leaving something unexplored so you’ll have a reason to come back. And for me, this is one of those places.
If you have extra time and are curious about the evolution of the Brunei Sultanate, this is a must-visit destination.
๐ถ How to Get There
The Brunei History Centre is located beside the Royal Regalia Museum. You can get there by:
- ๐ Bus – Take a local bus heading to the city center
- ๐ถ Walking – From the central area, it’s about a 10–15-minute walk, and you can enjoy the peaceful architecture of the city along the way
๐ Travel Tip
Visit the Royal Regalia Museum and Brunei History Centre on the same day — they are located right next to each other and complement each other’s exhibits. Just make sure to check operating hours before going, as both are often closed on weekends or holidays.
