⚱️ Mausoleum of Sultan Bolkiah – The Singing Captain of Brunei

Perched on a quiet ridge in Kota Batu, overlooking the serene Brunei River, lies the Mausoleum of Sultan Bolkiah — final resting place of the 5th Sultan of Brunei, and one of the most celebrated rulers in the nation’s history.

👑 Who Was Sultan Bolkiah?

Sultan Bolkiah reigned from 1485 to 1524, and is often remembered as the most famous and accomplished among Brunei’s sultans. His reign marked the Golden Age of the Brunei Empire, a time when the kingdom expanded its influence far across Borneo and even beyond.

Under his rule, Brunei became a dominant maritime power, with sovereignty extending over:

  • Sambas
  • Kotaringin
  • Pontianak
  • Kutai
  • Pasir
  • Tuli-Tuli
  • Banjarmasin
  • Burau
  • ...and briefly, even Manila, thanks to a legendary cannon known as Si-Gantar Alam, or “He Who Makes the Earth Shake.”

🎵 Nakhoda Ragam – The Singing Captain

Sultan Bolkiah was not only a brilliant leader and conqueror but also a skilled musician. He was fond of playing royal instruments, earning him the nickname Nakhoda Ragam, which means “The Singing Captain.”

This endearing trait adds a human layer to the historical figure — a ruler with both power and passion.

A Tragic Love Story at Sea

The Sultan met a poetic, though tragic, end. He died at sea while returning from Java, where he had recently married Puteri Laila Menchanai, a Javanese princess. According to the Salasilah Raja-Raja Brunei (Brunei Royal Genealogy), the princess wasn’t told of his death until the ship arrived in Brunei. Overcome with grief, she reportedly took her own life.

💬 Her name caught my attention, as it sounds similar to mine. I even took a photo of her nameplate while we were at Kampung Ayer — a small moment of personal connection in the midst of history.

📍 Why I Missed It — and Why That’s Okay

Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to visit the mausoleum during our trip. But as I’ve learned from past travels, it’s okay to leave something unseen — a reason to return, someday. Not sooner, perhaps, but definitely in the future.
