๐Ÿ•Œ Istana Nurul Iman – World’s Largest Residential Palace in Brunei

Also known as: Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque

First Impressions

I first laid eyes on this majestic mosque as we were heading to our hotel—and right then, I was captivated. It stood like a golden flame against the skyline, its reflection dancing on the artificial lagoon that surrounds it. That moment, I fell in love.

Despite the common belief that Brunei lacks attractions, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is proof that this nation has its own share of jaw-dropping landmarks. It’s considered one of the most beautiful mosques in Southeast Asia—and I wholeheartedly agree.

๐Ÿ“ Address: Jalan Stoney, Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei
๐Ÿ•’ Opening Hours:

  • Interior (Wednesdays & Saturdays): 8:30 AM–12:00 NN, 1:30 PM–3:00 PM, 4:30 PM–5:30 PM
  • Exterior (Fridays): 4:30 PM–5:00 PM
  • Compound (Daily): 8:00 AM–8:30 PM (except during prayer times)

๐Ÿ•Œ A Mosque of Lavish Grandeur

While the golden dome exterior is already mesmerizing, I’ve read that the interior is even more luxurious—a fusion of global craftsmanship:

  • ๐Ÿ›️ Marble walls and flooring imported from Italy
  • ๐ŸŒˆ Stained-glass windows and chandeliers made in England
  • ๐Ÿงต Carpets flown in from Saudi Arabia and Belgium
  • ๐Ÿงฉ 3.5 million-piece Venetian mosaic in the main dome
(A dream come true for any jigsaw enthusiast!)

Sadly, I wasn't able to go inside due to a religious event exclusive to Muslims that day, but it gave me even more reason to come back.

๐Ÿ›ถ Ceremonial Barge and Bridges

In front of the mosque lies a marble ceremonial barge, a replica of Sultan Bolkiah’s 16th-century Nahligai Barge, built to commemorate the 1,400th anniversary of the Nuzul Al-Quran (the revelation of the Quran).
Connected by marble bridges, it adds dramatic depth to the already stunning waterscape. One bridge even leads toward Kampong Ayer, the iconic water village.

๐ŸŒŸ The Golden Dome That Rules the Skyline

The most iconic feature is the main dome, covered in pure gold. At 171 feet high, it glows like a fireball during the day and illuminates the city like a beacon at night. It’s visible from almost every corner of Bandar Seri Begawan.

Here’s a fun fact:
๐Ÿ™️ No building in BSB is allowed to exceed the mosque’s height. In fact, the top floor of the Islamic Bank of Brunei was reportedly removed by the Sultan himself when it overshadowed the mosque’s minaret.

๐Ÿ—ผ The Minaret with a View

The marble minaret, a mix of Renaissance and Italian styles, houses an elevator that takes visitors up to enjoy a panoramic view of the city. Unfortunately, we missed this chance too due to the ongoing religious ceremony—but it’s definitely on my list for next time.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Even though I'm not a Muslim, the mosque enchanted me. It drew me in with its beauty, peace, and spiritual energy. Whether in daylight or under a moonlit sky, I could sit for hours just admiring its architectural grace.

If you visit Brunei, don’t skip this! Even a quiet walk from central BSB to the mosque is a treat—you’ll see its golden dome shimmering in the distance, guiding you like a lighthouse.

๐Ÿงญ Travel Tips

  • ๐Ÿง• Wear modest clothing, especially if you plan to enter.
  • ๐Ÿ“ธ Photography may be restricted inside; ask first.
  • ☀️ Best time to visit: early morning or sunset for optimal lighting and cooler temps.
  • ๐Ÿšถ It’s a short walk from most major BSB hotels and attractions.

๐Ÿ“Œ Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque is not just a religious site—it's an architectural marvel and a cultural icon. From its golden dome and Italian marble floors to the ceremonial barge and lush surroundings, this mosque is the crown jewel of Brunei.
