πŸ•°️ A Glimpse Into History

Nestled in the heart of Batac, Ilocos Norte—the birthplace of former President Ferdinand Marcos—is a museum that offers a controversial yet compelling glimpse into his life. The museum serves a dual purpose: as a repository of memorabilia and as the final resting place (or at least a symbolic one) of the late president.

Unlike other Marcos-related museums that showcase the extensive collection of the former First Lady Imelda Marcos, this one focuses more on Ferdinand himself. From personal artifacts of his youth to memorabilia from his political career and posthumous honors, the exhibits trace a life marked by both grandeur and infamy.

🌊 Pagudpud Blue Lagoon Review: Crowds and Traffic Challenges

 πŸ“ Location: Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

"A Crowded Experience and Reasons to Return"

⚠️ Tip: Avoid visiting Blue Lagoon during Holy Week if you prefer less crowded beaches

πŸ–️ Quick Dip but Not Quite What I Expected

Our visit to Pagudpud’s Blue Lagoon was a quick one, mainly because it was overcrowded — definitely not my cup of tea. If you’re like me and prefer peaceful spots, avoid going here during Holy Week, as it’s packed with tourists.

πŸš— Traffic Woes and Tiring Arrival

The trip was stressful due to heavy traffic. My friend’s mom even stepped out to help manage the jam! After such a long journey, we arrived hungry and tired, which didn’t help with the overall experience.

πŸ€” My Take on Blue Lagoon Beach

Honestly, I was a bit disappointed. The beach itself wasn’t what I expected—mainly because of the crowds. I’ve been to Capones, Anawangin, Calaguas, and Boracay, and this didn’t quite measure up for me. But that’s just my opinion!

πŸ’‘ Why I’ll Come Back to Pagudpud

Pagudpud has many beautiful beaches beyond Blue Lagoon. I’m hopeful that on my next visit, I can explore the less crowded, quieter spots and enjoy the natural beauty the area has to offer.

πŸ§™‍♂️ A Lake Shrouded in Legend

Known to locals as “Dakkel Danum”, Paoay Lake is more than just a scenic freshwater body—it's steeped in folklore, mystery, and cultural memory. According to legend, this massive lake wasn’t always here. Long ago, it was once a prosperous village inhabited by deeply religious settlers. But over time, their faith turned into arrogance, and their morals waned.

As punishment, the gods sent a flood that submerged the entire community, turning it into what is now Paoay Lake. Since then, it’s been regarded as a place of spiritual consequence.

πŸ• St. William Cathedral Bell Tower Laoag: The Philippines’ Tallest and Heaviest

🏰 The First Landmark You’ll See in Laoag

Standing tall and proud at 45 meters, the bell tower of St. William Cathedral is reputed to be the most solid, massive, and tallest bell tower in the Philippines. As you enter Laoag’s town proper, this centuries-old structure is the first thing to greet your eyes.

πŸ“ Laoag, Ilocos Norte
πŸ•°️ Height: 45 meters | Built: 17th Century
πŸ›️ Iconic Filipino Heritage Site

🐴 Stories from the Past

Legend has it that back in the day, a person on horseback could ride straight into the tower through its door. Now, the entrance is so low that visitors must bend over just to enter.

The tower houses six bells of different sizes, each with its own history and purpose.

πŸ›‘️ Bell Towers as Watchtowers: A Unique Ilocano Feature

In Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur, most churches have bell towers physically separated from the main church building. A local explained that this was intentional:

  • ⛪ The church served as an evacuation center, protecting women and children during attacks.
  • πŸ•°️ Men used the bell tower as a watchtower to keep an eye out for enemy soldiers.

This tower is the furthest from the church I’ve seen, but it still commands a strategic vantage point.

πŸ“Έ Visit and Photography Tips

Though we couldn’t get close this time (priority was mass attendance), you won’t miss this bell tower — even with its slight sinking, it’s visible from afar.

🌟 I’m eager to return to Laoag to explore the tower properly and capture its grandeur up close.

✅ Visitor Tips

  • πŸ“… Visit during church hours to attend mass and explore
  • πŸ“· Bring a zoom lens or camera for photos if you can’t get close
  • πŸ‘Ÿ Comfortable shoes recommended for walking around the town proper
  • πŸ•°️ Plan extra time if you want to visit the tower and the cathedral
