π Why Sumaguing Cave is a Must-Do in Sagada
Sumaguing Cave is the largest and most famous cave chamber in Sagada—and for good reason. Deep within its limestone walls lie surreal rock formations, icy cold pools, and natural sculptures that make you question if you're still in the Philippines... or on another planet.
Even first-timers and non-climbers can enjoy this cave, thanks to trained local guides who make sure you’re safe and amazed every step of the way. π
π§ The Experience: Cave Connection to Sumaguing
Our adventure started at Lumiang Burial Cave, known for its ancient wooden coffins stacked at the entrance. This part is steep, slippery, and demands extra caution—especially when navigating narrow holes and bone-chilling pools.
Once you’ve made it past Lumiang’s spine-tingling corridors, your reward is the magical descent into Sumaguing Cave—the “Big Chamber.”
πͺ¨ Rock Formations You’ll Never Forget
Each formation has a name that brings it to life—and some may surprise you. π
- π« The Chocolate Cake – Smooth, delicious-looking layers of rock
- π The King & The Queen – You’ll understand the name… but maybe not safe for kids π
- π Elephant’s Foot – A massive, trunk-like rock near a cold-water pool
- π The Crocodile – With teeth-like edges, this one’s a classic photo spot
“At first, I thought we were being dramatic. But by the time I saw The Queen, I burst out laughing—no wonder they don’t show this on postcards!”
π§ Sumaguing's Cold Surprise
The biggest challenge? The darkness
and the freezing water.
Your guide will carry a kerosene lamp, but it’s still pitch black outside that small glow. Pools of icy water sit between rock climbs—and yes, you will get wet!
The rocks in Sumaguing are smoother than Lumiang's, which can help with grip but also requires caution.
π️ Exit and End of the Adventure
After nearly 5 hours underground, we finally emerged—soaked, smiling, and just in time for the rain. You’ll have no idea what’s going on outside while inside, so be prepared for a dramatic return to daylight.
πͺNote: The Sumaguing entrance doubles as the exit for those who start their journey from Lumiang Cave.
