๐Ÿš‹ Peak Tram Hong Kong: Iconic Ride with a View and Visual Illusion

Aside from riding the Ngong Ping Cable Car, I was really looking forward to riding the Peak Tram—not just because it’s one of the oldest forms of transportation in Hong Kong, but because of the visual illusion you experience while riding it!

Despite being a popular tourist attraction, the tram is also a mode of transport for local residents living in the Mid-Levels and The Peak. Operated by the Hong Kong and Shanghai Hotels (yes, the same company behind The Peninsula), it opened on May 30, 1888, with only 600 passengers on its first day. Since then, it's become an iconic part of Hong Kong’s history.

๐Ÿ“ Lower Terminus: Where It All Begins

We started our journey at the Peak Tram Lower Terminus, located at Garden Road, right next to the Peak Tram Historical Gallery—a mini museum filled with over 200 historical memorabilia. Originally, we planned to explore the gallery, but after a morning visit to Kowloon Walled City Park, we ran out of time.

The line here can get super long, especially at noon, so I was relieved that I had purchased tickets via Klook. Klook provided a special fast-track lane, allowing us to skip the long queues under the sun.

Waiting time (with Klook): Just 15 minutes!

๐Ÿ’ก Tip: The Peak Tram boarding process can get a bit pushy—be firm when getting inside the tram!

๐ŸŽข What’s the Ride Like?

Once on board, we sat on the right side of the tram (best view!) and started ascending. The scenery is what makes this ride so iconic—skyscrapers, Victoria Harbour, and forested slopes of Hong Kong Island.

But the most exciting part? The illusion!

View from the tram

Buildings along the route appear to be tilting backward, creating an optical trick that makes you feel like the city is falling toward The Peak. I tried capturing it on camera, but photos look normal—no buildings are actually tilted!

๐Ÿ“š According to a University of Hong Kong study, the illusion is caused by the reclined seating position and the tilted visual environment, which changes your sense of vertical. It’s truly something you need to see in person.

๐Ÿ™Œ Helpful Tips

  • Book via Klook for priority boarding and skip-the-line access. The Klook representative will give you your tickets at the designated meet-up point.
  • Try to ride the tram before 5:30 PM. Lines going back to Central can be long after that.
  • Sit on the right side of the tram (when going up) for the best views and illusion.
  • Want to avoid crowds? Visit early in the morning or late at night—but check the weather. We skipped the nighttime view due to heavy fog.

๐Ÿš‡ How to Get to the Peak Tram Lower Terminus

  • MTR: Take the Island Line or Tsuen Wan Line to Central Station, then exit via J2. From there, it's a 10-minute walk through Chater Garden.
