๐ถ A Childhood Memory I’ll Never Forget
When I was younger, there was one Holy Week tradition in Marinduque that always confused and unsettled me—Payapak. It wasn’t dramatic like the Pugutan, nor colorful like the Morion masks. It was quiet. Still. Unnerving.
People—actual people—would lay themselves face-down along the roadside. As we joined the procession, we’d be told to walk right over them. That was the ritual. That was their panata—a personal vow, a form of sacrifice.
๐ญ I remember hesitating every time. I didn’t want to hurt them. I’d tap them ever so gently with the tip of my toes and leap over, just enough to say I participated without causing pain. But not my sister—she’d gleefully step (and even jump!) on their backs. ๐
✝️ What is Payapak All About?
For outsiders, Payapak might look bizarre or even disturbing. But for us, it’s:
๐น A Deeply Symbolic Act – These devotees believe that being stepped on by fellow believers will cleanse them of their sins or fulfill a promise to God.
๐น A Form of Humility – Laying flat in public, voluntarily, is an act of surrender and submission. It represents lowering oneself to be lifted in spirit.
๐น A Personal Panata – Some do it for healing, for protection, or as thanksgiving. Others have vowed to do it for years—marked by the number of wooden rods or prayers they carry.
๐ฃ Tips If You Witness or Join a Payapak Procession:
๐ถ♀️ Walk Gently but Firmly. Don’t hesitate or show fear—these devotees want you to step on them. It’s part of their offering.
๐ Be Respectful. No selfies, no giggles. Even if you’re unfamiliar, understand that this is sacred and deeply personal.
๐ Wear Closed Shoes. Just in case you feel unsure, wearing soft-soled shoes can make it easier to walk over people respectfully.
๐ธ Ask Before You Capture. If you want to photograph this moment, seek consent from organizers or elders beforehand.
❤️ A Reflection from the Road
Now that I’m older, I realize how powerful this tradition is. To lie on the road in front of hundreds—knowing full well they’ll walk over you—takes more than faith. It takes courage. It’s a physical manifestation of the very thing we often struggle with: surrender.
