π΄ Oriental Mindoro: Where Waterfalls, White Sand, and Warm Smiles Welcome You Like Home
“Where waterfalls, white sand, and warm smiles welcome you like home.”
I’ll be honest—I didn’t expect to fall in love with Oriental Mindoro.
For the longest time, I thought of it as just a stopover. A side trip from Puerto Galera. Somewhere you pass through on the way to something else. But the more I explored, the more I realized how wrong I was.
Oriental Mindoro is seriously underrated. From surprise waterfalls hidden behind rice paddies, to coastal towns that feel like your grandparents’ backyard (but with better seafood), this province is full of unfiltered, no-frills magic—and it’s incredibly DIY-friendly.
And maybe… I was always meant to love it.
π Why Oriental Mindoro Was Always a Dream Destination for Me
Like Quezon Province, Mindoro had always been a dream province for me—ever since I can remember.
I used to love listening to radio stations growing up, and yes, I even had a teenage crush on one of their DJs when I was in high school. I can’t remember the name of the station anymore… but I definitely still remember the DJ’s name (LOL).
Most of my mother’s relatives live in Mindoro, yet we never had the chance to visit them—even though it’s just a boat ride away from Marinduque, my home province. I grew up afraid of sailing, and until college, I had never really been outside our island.
My first visit was in 2008, with friends from work, and I fell in love instantly. Maybe because Mindoro reminded me so much of Marinduque—the pace, the people, the landscapes. During that trip, I made the effort to look for my mother’s brother armed with nothing but a first name. Somehow, I found him. That alone made the trip unforgettable.
My next visit was with my family, and while the first couple of days were wonderful, the third day nearly broke me. We traveled from Puerto Galera to Calapan, and I experienced one of the worst bouts of motion sickness of my life. The road was long, zigzaggy, and uncomfortable. I was honestly just grateful I didn’t throw up inside the van.
Still—despite all that—I will still come back.
πΊ️ Where Is Oriental Mindoro?
Just a few hours south of Manila, Oriental Mindoro sits across the Verde Island Passage from Batangas. It’s known for:
- π️ Puerto Galera’s beaches
- π Tamaraw Falls & Tukuran River
- π§Ά Mangyan heritage and handicrafts
- π️ Secret beaches in Bulalacao and Bansud
- π️ Gateway to Mt. Halcon—the beast of the south
Whether you’re after relaxation, culture, or adventure, Oriental Mindoro quietly delivers.
π How to Get There (DIY Route from Manila)
Here’s my tried-and-tested commuter route:
π Manila to Batangas Pier
- JAM Liner, DLTB, Alps
- ₱250
- Travel time: 2–2.5 hours
- π‘ Tip: Take the 4:00–5:00 AM bus to catch early ferries
⛴️ Batangas Pier to Puerto Galera
- Fast craft or RORO: ₱500–₱700
- 1.5–2 hours of scenic sailing
- I sat on the top deck with sea breeze + offline Spotify—no regrets
From Puerto Galera, you can continue deeper into Mindoro via van, jeepney, or motorbike to places like Calapan, Naujan, Roxas, or Bulalacao.
π How to Get Around Oriental Mindoro
Getting around Oriental Mindoro is part of the adventure. It’s not complicated, but it does require a bit of patience, flexibility, and a sense of humor—especially once you leave the main towns.
The good news? Local transport is affordable, frequent, and very DIY-friendly.
π️ Where To Stay
Choosing where to stay in Oriental Mindoro really depends on the kind of experience you’re after. For this trip, I stayed in two very different places—one right by the beach for easy access to activities, and another in the city for comfort and rest.
π Night 1: La Solana Beach Resort – White Beach, Puerto Galera
La Solana was our home by the sea, and honestly, you can’t beat the location. It sits right along White Beach, making it a perfect base if you want to wake up, step outside, and already be on the sand.
The resort has a relaxed, tropical vibe—nothing fancy, but comfortable enough after a long day of swimming and island-hopping. Nights can get lively because of nearby bars, but if you’re there to experience White Beach energy, this place puts you exactly where the action is.
Why stay here:
- Beachfront access (sunsets just steps away)
- Near restaurants, bars, and tour operators
- Ideal for first-time Puerto Galera visitors and budget travelers
π Night 2: Filipiniana Hotel – Calapan City
After the buzz of White Beach, staying at Filipiniana Hotel in Calapan felt like hitting the pause button. It’s a well-known hotel in the city and a favorite among locals and travelers who want comfort without the chaos.
The rooms are clean, spacious, and quiet—perfect for resting after long road trips. What I appreciated most was how convenient everything was: restaurants, transport terminals, and shops were all nearby. It’s a great choice if you’re using Calapan as a base to explore the rest of Oriental Mindoro.
Why stay here:
- Comfortable city hotel with a peaceful atmosphere
- Centrally located in Calapan
- Ideal for families and travelers heading deeper into Mindoro

a White Beach + Calapan combo is a smart move. You get the best of both
worlds—coastal fun and city convenience.
π£️Oriental Mindoro reminded me why I fell in love with traveling in the first place.
Not because of luxury resorts or curated experiences—but because of the quiet moments in between: the slow walks around town plazas, the sound of waterfalls hidden behind rice fields, the laughter shared with strangers who feel like family by the end of the day.
It’s a place that doesn’t rush you. A place that lets you explore at your own pace, stumble upon surprises, and feel deeply connected—not just to nature, but to people.
If you’re willing to go beyond the usual routes, trade convenience for curiosity, and embrace a bit of unpredictability, Oriental Mindoro will reward you generously.
Sometimes, the most unforgettable trips are the ones that feel like coming home.
π If you’re ready to trade luxury resorts for laughter with locals and hidden adventures, Oriental Mindoro will welcome you like family.
