πŸš‡ How to Get to Shilin Night Market (Taipei MRT Guide + Food Tips)

Shilin Night Market was one of the places we really looked forward to in Taipei.

Even though we were already tired from walking all day, we still made sure we visited—because night markets are part of what makes Taiwan so unforgettable.

Compared to Ximending, I found Shilin bigger, more organized, and more food-focused. It’s the kind of place where you can shop for socks and umbrellas one minute… then suddenly find yourself holding a giant chicken steak the next.

And yes, it gets very busy—so bring patience, an empty stomach, and a sense of adventure.

πŸš† By MRT (Best and Easiest Option)

The MRT is the simplest way to reach Shilin Night Market.

Step-by-step:

  1. Take the Taipei MRT Red Line (Tamsui–Xinyi Line)
  2. Get off at Jiantan Station
  3. Use Exit 1
  4. Walk straight for about 5 minutes
  5. Follow the crowd—you’ll know you’re heading the right way!

πŸ“ Station Name: Jiantan Station (R15)

πŸ’‘ Important Tip:
Do NOT get off at “Shilin Station.”
Jiantan Station is closer to the main entrance of the night market.

πŸš‰ From Taipei Main Station (Quick Route)

If you’re staying near Taipei Main Station, this is very easy:

Travel Time: 15–20 minutes

  1. Ride the Red Line northbound
  2. Get off at Jiantan Station

Perfect for a stress-free evening food trip.

🚢 Walking Tip (Short but Crowded)

From Jiantan Station, the walk is short but the area becomes very crowded at night.

🚢 Expect lots of people, street vendors, and photo stops along the way.

πŸ’‘ Wear comfy shoes and keep your belongings close.

πŸš– By Taxi or Uber (Most Convenient)

If you’re traveling with kids, seniors, or carrying shopping bags, taxis are also a good option.

πŸ’° Estimated fare from central Taipei: NT$200–NT$350
(depending on traffic)

πŸš– Taxi rides in Taipei are safe, metered, and reliable.

🚌 By Bus (Budget-Friendly Option)

Shilin Night Market is also accessible by city buses coming from:

  • Taipei Main Station
  • Xinyi District
  • Zhongshan Area

🚌 However, bus routes can be confusing for first-timers, so MRT is still the easiest.

🍜 Come hungry — this is street food heaven

🌸Taipei’s Street Food Playground

Shilin Night Market isn’t just a place to eat.

It’s a full Taipei experience—bright lights, endless stalls, smoky grills, laughter, and flavors you’ll talk about long after the trip ends.

This is where you go when you want to feel the city’s energy after dark.

And honestly?

Some of my favorite travel memories are made in places like this—with sauce on my hands and happy feet walking through the crowd.
