"Gothic blue beauty, silent prayers, and a glimpse of
Palawan’s colonial past"
Just across Plaza Cuartel, and a short walk from Rizal Park, stands one of Puerto Princesa’s most captivating landmarks: the Immaculate Conception Cathedral. What immediately caught my eye was its gothic architecture—a rare sight in the Philippines—and its blue and white faΓ§ade, reflecting the sky like a celestial painting.
π° A Gothic Surprise in the Heart of the City
The moment I saw it, I stopped walking. The pointed arches, tall windows, and twin towers reminded me of Medieval Europe, not the tropics of Palawan. It felt like a quiet sanctuary dropped right into the middle of the bustling town.
π¨ “The blue and white hues felt like heaven touched the ground. It’s peaceful, grand, and humbling all at once.”
π Address: Town
Plaza Complex, Puerto Princesa, Palawan
π
Architectural Style: Neo-Gothic with Filipino adaptation
π
Color Symbolism: Sky blue and white represent purity and peace
π A Brief History
- π―️ A small church was first built here in 1872 by Spanish missionaries
- π Reconstructed in 1961 to the cathedral as it stands today
- π️ Served as a refuge during World War II—a symbol of hope for many locals
It’s more than a beautiful building—it’s a spiritual anchor for the community, especially during times of hardship.
π Inside the Cathedral
Sadly, I wasn’t able to go inside. The tour was wrapping up, and I was too mesmerized by the exterior to realize time was running out. That’s the one downside of being on a guided group tour—you often wish you had more time.
π§ “I did manage to peek through the doors and saw some locals praying quietly. Even from outside, you could feel the reverence.”
π―️ Tip: If you're on a self-guided tour, allot at least 20–30 minutes to appreciate both the interior and exterior.
