๐Ÿ•Š️ Plaza Cuartel, Puerto Princesa – A Silent Witness to History

"A peaceful park with a dark past: remember the fallen heroes of the Palawan Massacre"

From a distance, Plaza Cuartel looks like an ordinary city park—quiet, green, and inviting. But behind its peaceful facade is a harrowing story that dates back to World War II. It’s one of those places where beauty and tragedy coexist, and where history lingers quietly in the air.

๐Ÿ›️ What Is Plaza Cuartel?

Once a military garrison, Plaza Cuartel has since been restored and converted into a memorial park. But its grounds witnessed one of the darkest wartime atrocities in Palawan’s history—the Palawan Massacre.

๐Ÿ˜” “Walking through the entrance felt ordinary—until I learned what happened here.”

๐Ÿ”ฅ The Palawan Massacre: A Story That Must Be Told

Memorial marker for the POW who died in the tragedy

In December 1944, about 150 American prisoners of war (POWs) were held in this garrison by Japanese forces. Suspecting an American rescue attempt, the captors burned the prisoners alive, and those who tried to escape were hunted down and shot.

Only 11 men survived—they escaped by swimming across the bay to Iwahig.
The remains of those who died were later transferred to Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Missouri, USA.

๐Ÿ•ฏ️ Memorial Marker: A monument now stands to honor the fallen POWs, with their names and the tragic details engraved.

The energy inside Plaza Cuartel shifts when you know the story. I had goosebumps reading the inscription on the marker. It’s not a place for selfies or loud laughter—but for reflection, respect, and remembrance.

๐Ÿ•Š️ “I stood in silence, knowing that this peaceful spot was once a place of unimaginable horror.”

Even though you may not spend more than 20–30 minutes here, the impact lasts much longer.
