π️ The Proud Heart of Bacarra
Originally known as San Miguel Church, the St. Michael the Archangel Church holds the title of the largest church in Ilocos Norte. Built during the Spanish colonial period, it took over a century to complete, with construction beginning in 1779 and finishing in 1889.
π Before the church was completed, a convent built in 1769 served as a temporary chapel — another historical gem within the complex.

π A Short but Striking
Bell Tower
What caught my eye was the church’s bell tower, standing just beside the church — the shortest I’ve seen so far, yet full of character. It doesn’t rise high like the towers in Bantay or Laoag, but it proudly reflects centuries of quiet resilience.
π Fun Fact: Its unique size and design contrast beautifully with the massive structure of the church beside it.
𧱠A Glimpse of Red Brick
History
We passed by early in the morning en route to Pagudpud, so the church doors were still closed. I’ve heard the interior is lined with red bricks, adding to the rustic colonial charm.
π° Bonus trivia: One of the daughters of a former Philippine President even chose this church for her wedding — proof of its elegant and historic ambiance.
