🌴 Top Tourist Attractions in Puerto Princesa – Things to Do, Travel Tips & Hidden Gems

"A heartfelt travel journal from my Palawan escape"

I’ve always had a soft spot for places that feel both peaceful and powerful—and Puerto Princesa gave me exactly that. It’s the kind of destination where history meets nature, where you can chase quiet sunsets after wild adventures, and where you’re constantly reminded that the Philippines is full of places still worth exploring.

I’ve been to Leyte twice (and loved every trip), but Puerto Princesa left a different mark—something deeper, slower, and more grounding. It’s not just clean and green (although it proudly is), it also holds stories: of war, of freedom, of crocodiles and convicts, of sky-blue churches and hopia-filled hills.

So if you're planning a trip soon, here’s a personal list of the places I’ve visited—and the memories I’ve carried home. Some are iconic, some are quietly tucked away, but each one is worth seeing at least once in your life.

Let me show you around 💚

🕊️ Plaza Cuartel

I thought this was just another leafy park until I read what happened here. Standing on this quiet ground, I couldn’t help but feel a chill — knowing that this was the site of the Palawan Massacre during WWII. It’s the kind of place that humbles you, reminding you how peaceful today is because of the tragedies of the past.

Immaculate Conception Cathedral

This church stopped me in my tracks. I’ve seen many churches before, but there’s something striking about the sky-blue and white Gothic structure that makes it feel like it’s glowing. I didn’t get to stay long inside because our tour was ending, but I knew I’d come back someday—just to sit and take it all in.

🐊 Palawan Wildlife Rescue & Conservation Center

I’m not a big fan of reptiles, but visiting the former Crocodile Farm surprised me. From glass-encased skeletons to baby crocs wiggling in shallow pens, it was equal parts eerie and educational. I even got to hold a Palawan bearcat — and yes, it was cuter than I expected!

🧑‍🌾 Iwahig Prison and Penal Farm

This was one of the most unexpected stops. No walls, no high-security fences — just a vast open field and inmates tending rice paddies. I always thought of Iwahig as a scary place growing up. But being there in person made me see it differently. It’s hopeful.

🌄 Sta. Monica Ranch (Mitra’s Farm)

After a day of touring, this place felt like a breath of fresh air—literally. Sitting at the top of a hill, Mitra’s Ranch gives you a panoramic view of Honda Bay and the city below. I didn’t try the zipline or horseback riding. I was more than happy just sitting quietly and enjoying the breeze.

🍰 Baker’s Hill

If you love sweets and selfies, this is your stop. It started as a bakery, but now it’s a quirky mini-park with cartoon statues, celebrity cutouts, and the best hopia I’ve ever had. My only regret? Not budgeting more for snacks and pasalubong.

🧵 Binuatan Creations

This was our last stop, and I’m glad we didn’t skip it. Watching locals hand-weave intricate textiles made me appreciate the craft so much more. I even tried weaving—and now I understand why these pieces are pricey. They’re not just fabric; they’re art.

Sabang Port & Sabang Beach

This is your jump-off point to the Underground River, but it’s more than just a waiting area. The view is calm and peaceful, the breeze lulls you to sleep, and the beach—though not powdery—is still beautiful. I’d love to explore more here next time.

🌊 Subterranean River (Underground River)

I was so excited… until I got inside. As someone who’s slightly claustrophobic, the darkness of the cave was unnerving. But the rock formations, the boat ride, and the strange beauty of this natural wonder made it a once-in-a-lifetime experience. It made me reflect on how beautiful—and terrifying—nature can be.

🏞️ Elephant Cave & Karst Mountain

This wasn’t even on my radar, but I’m so glad we stopped. The limestone cliffs, rice fields, and untouched beauty were a photographer’s dream. You’ll want to pause here just to breathe it all in.

🌅 Buena Vista View Deck

The name alone made me smile—Buena Vista, just like my beloved hometown. This is a great rest stop with a view of the West Philippine Sea, a place to grab snacks, and stretch out after a long van ride. Prices are a little high, but the view is worth the pause.

🛍️ LRC 908 Market Mall

Before heading home, we made sure to stop here for pasalubong. Pearls, cashew nuts, local crafts—you name it. I even came back the next day just to buy more. If you're serious about souvenir shopping, this is where you go.

🏝️ Honda Bay

We saved the best for last: island hopping! Although we only visited Cowrie Island and Starfish Island, it was my first time enjoying snorkeling—and it was magical. Everyone says Coron is better, and maybe it is, but I’ll find that out myself next time.
