πͺ¨ Where Mystery Meets Accessibility
Bohol isn't just home to the iconic Chocolate Hills, pristine white-sand beaches, and rare exotic seashells. The island also hides a geological treasure beneath its surface: caves—lots of them. In fact, over 1,400 caves have been recorded in the province, with more still waiting to be discovered.
But you don’t need to trek deep into the jungle to see one. Just head to Hinagdanan Cave, an easily accessible natural gem right in Panglao Island, just minutes from the town proper.
πͺ Why It’s Called "Hinagdanan"
The name Hinagdanan literally means “laddered” in Cebuano. According to our tour guide, the cave was discovered by accident—when the landowner was clearing the area, he stumbled upon a hole. Out of curiosity, he tossed a stone in and heard a splash. He later built a ladder to climb down and explore.
π The original entrance is no longer used, but the name stuck!
Today, guests descend via a narrow opening—only one person can go through at a time—followed by concrete stairs with steel railings for safety.
π A Naturally Lit Underground World
Unlike other caves that rely on artificial lighting, Hinagdanan Cave is naturally illuminated.
Sunlight streams through holes in the cave ceiling, casting an enchanting glow over the limestone interior and the underground lagoon.
"It felt like stepping into another world—peaceful, mystical, and a bit eerie, especially with the reflections dancing on the water."
π♂️ About That Lagoon...
A clear lagoon sits at the base of the cave—so tempting for a swim, and some locals still do. However, it remains not advisable due to karst pollutants in the water. In past visits, we’ve seen locals wade in, but for tourists, it’s better to simply admire the view.
❗ Updated 2025: Warning signs are now posted more visibly near the lagoon, discouraging swimming and reminding visitors of water quality risks.
𧱠Stunning Rock Formations
The cave features around 100 meters of dramatic limestone formations, with stalactites and stalagmites almost touching, as if trying to meet in the middle.
But here's a gentle reminder:
π Please don’t touch the formations. Human contact can disrupt their natural growth and alter their color. A few seconds of curiosity can damage something that took thousands of years to form.
