🏮 About the Taoist Temple
Located in Beverly Hills Subdivision, Cebu City, the Taoist Temple was built in 1972 by Cebu’s Chinese community. Unlike many other temples, this one welcomes non-worshipers as well, making it a popular tourist destination in Cebu.
🧱 A Grand Entrance
Temple's entrance - a replica of the Great Wall of China |
As you arrive, you'll be greeted by an entrance gate modeled after the Great Wall of China. At first glance, it may seem like a modest place—but once inside, the temple complex reveals its grandeur.
📝 This was my first time seeing a temple up close, and I was honestly amazed by the architectural details.
🔮 Taoist Rituals
Though we didn’t enter the chapel out of respect (we are not devotees), I’ve read about two rituals that devotees can participate in:
- Wash your hands
- Enter the chapel barefoot
- Make a wish by tossing two wooden blocks
- If both land face up, your wish is granted
- If only one or neither is face up, you must return another time
- Climb 81 steps, symbolizing the 81 chapters of Taoism scriptures
- At the top, light joss sticks
- Receive a fortune reading from a monk
🏞️ Things to See
The temple complex includes:
- 🛕 Chapel (some areas closed to tourists)
- 📚 Library
- 🛍️ Souvenir shop
- 🌊 Wishing well
- 🌇 Scenic balconies with city views
- 🌿 Three winding paths and stairways for exploring
📷 Picture Taking & Reminders
There’s no strict dress code, but since this is a sacred site, it’s important to:
- Dress modestly
- Keep noise to a minimum
- Be mindful of taking photos, especially around altars and sacred objects
🌆 Best Spot for City Views
When I first visited with friends, we were pressed for time and only saw the lower levels. On my return visit with family, we made it to the second level—and that’s where the real magic happens. The city view is breathtaking, and it’s a peaceful place to just sit, breathe, and take it all in.
🧘 It felt like we were far from the hustle of Cebu, even though we were still within the city.
🛵 Getting There
The temple is located in a private subdivision, so access can be tricky without a car. Here's how you can get there:
- 🚗 By Private Vehicle or Car Rental – Ideal for groups
- 🏍️ By Habal-Habal (Motorbike) – These can take you to the village entrance; from there, you’ll have to walk uphill to reach the temple
Despite the distance from the town proper, the journey is worth it—not just for the temple, but also for the beautiful houses and peaceful neighborhood views along the way.
💬 If you're in Cebu and looking for a unique cultural and spiritual experience, don’t skip the Taoist Temple. It's one of the most serene and visually stunning places I’ve been to. Whether you’re making a wish or simply enjoying the views, it’s a great stop that combines heritage, architecture, and tranquility.
🐉 “More than just a tourist spot, the Taoist Temple is a window into centuries-old traditions, hidden within the hills of Cebu.”
